Programs & Initiatives of the Foundation

Rural Outreach:  In 2002 we began our first initiative that brings services into the rural area of our county with a Community Health Education Project.  This project provides health education to families in rural communities with a special interest in serving the Mexican farmworker community.   We have 4 community educators that were given training in breastfeeding, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and domestic violence so they can provide this education to their community on a one on one basis or in small groups.  The program is provided in West Volusia presently, the initiative is supported with funding from the Northeast Florida Area Health Education Council in Jacksonville.

Family Economic Success:  This initiative began in May 2004 with a $10,000 grant from the Aspen Insitiute and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  This initiative focuses on bringing the tools to low-income individuals and families that will help them build assets and rise out of poverty.  The “Campaign for Working Families” is the name of the initiative that is a coaliboration between key community partners like: United Way of Volusia/Flagler counties, Workforce Development Board, One Stop Career Centers, IRS, FDIC, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, SunTrust and more.  The campaign provides:  Money Smart Financial Education classes for families, free tax preparation, and connection to other community resources for working families.

We provide a key leadership role in this coalition.  August 2005 the Annie E. Casey Foundation gave us a $12,000 grant to continue and expand this work.
If you have a desire to help in tax preparation, or education classes please let us know by filling in the volunteer form. We will be in touch with you asap.

 Connected By 25: Began in 2004 with a grant from the Coalition for Community Foundations for Youth. They funded a convening of key community leaders that was held in March 2005 to educate local leaders about this national project.

Youth in transition is a working description linking teens aging out of foster care, youth in the juvenile justice system, and kids who do not finish high school.

The purpose of this grant is to connect community foundations to the work of a group of national and regional funders who are developing strategies under the umbrella of “Connected by 25” to help young people (14-25) in transition move toward a healthy, productive adulthood. The Youth Transition Funders Group (YTFG) is a group of national foundations working together across issues such as juvenile justice, foster care and out of school youth to have greater impact, influence and leverage on policies and programs that support youth in transition.Individually and as a group they are funding programs and developing strategies to increase the number of vulnerable youth who:

  • Get and keep a job;
  • Enter into a positive relationship with another person and have access to supportive networks;
  • Become successful parents; and
  • Participate in the civic life of their neighborhoods and communities

    From this initiative we made a commitment as an organization to engaging youth in our community.  We are committed to placing 2 youth on our board of directors by Dec. 05 and beginning a youth philanthropy initiative.
